Permanent Exhibition
The Museum of Art and Cultural History Schloss Gottorf owns some 120,000 works of art and items, from which it presents selected exhibits to present in its permanent exhibition. A large part of the permanent exhibition has previously been on display in the rooms of the castle, which is closed due to extensive renovation and modernisation work. However, Schleswig Museum Island remains open. Read on and discover why it is still worth a visit.
In autumn 2026, the Museum of Art and Cultural History will reopen its ‘Gallery of Modern Art’, which will display 20th and 21st century art in a space covering more than 2,000 square metres. The valuable collection of Rolf and Bettina Horn, which is housed there, will enter into a lively dialogue with the museum's collection. One focus will be on Expressionism, which has long been considered a highlight of Museum Island.
The sculpture park on the Schleswig museum island presents more than 50 figurative and immaterial, in-part monumental statuary works dating from the end of the 19th century to the current day around the magnificent Baroque building. The oldest work dates back to 1889, the latest is from 2013. The creators include well-known names: Karl Hartung, Bernhard Heiliger, Hans Wimmer, Magdalena Abakanovicz and also Daniel Spoerri.
Particularly noteworthy is the reconstructed Gottorf Globe, located near Museum Island, which is considered the first planetarium in history, as well as the reconstructed Baroque garden that surrounds it. CONTINUE...
